How to Find Photoshoot Locations

Are you ever at a loss where to do your next photoshoot session? Sometimes we get tired of the same park and are in need of a new splash of inspiration. Here are some of the methods I’ve used to find locations!

A bit of background on me: I’ve lived in Edmonton, AB for YEARS and struggled to find locations at the start. It’s not exactly the most photogenic city (although, it does have it’s hidden gems) so these are all tricks I’ve used to make the best of my location!

Find the photogenic landmarks in your city.

Is it a bridge, city view look out, or a notable donut shop? Every city has it's well known locations and of course, as a photographer, make an effort to shoot in these places at least once. These are popular locations for a reason!

But let’s say you’ve used up these places, or perhaps you want to stand out.

Keep an eye out whenever you're out.

My search for a new location is never off (for better or for worse) and I found this lovely staircase while I was out having sushi with friends! I made a mental note (I suggest taking a photo with your phone so you won't forget) and sure enough a few months later I recommended the spot to a model and we did a shoot there!

Walk around.

If you're in a dense location like downtown, walk a few blocks to find some hidden gems. I've shot many times downtown and I always find something new every time!

Search local Facebook photography groups.

To get a specific location in your area, search "photoshoot location" in [your city] Photographers' Facebook groups. Someone has probably asked this same question!

Follow local creatives and pay attention to their "Location" tag on Instagram.

Sometimes the specific address is tagged in a photo! I have a "Locations" Saved folder in Instagram keeping track of these. Always be prepared to jot down a location when you need it!

Network with other photographers in your city.

If you've been in the scene for a few years, you'll start to notice the locations where photographers shoot at. Many photographers are comfortable with sharing the location to places if you ask kindly, but be aware that there are also some who won't reveal their secret location - but don't take this to heart! There is pride in finding a new location very few are aware of.
