What is documentary-style photography?

Documentary photography is a genre of photography that aims to capture candid and spontaneous moments in a narrative form. This means storytelling with environmental context and details, minimal intervention, and ultimately - relaxing and soaking in all the natural tears and open-mouthed laughter as it happens throughout the day.

My approach and style combines documentary and editorial: creating effortless, emotional depth in your photos highlighted by your own personal style, timeless tones, and composition deserving to be in magazines.

  • I strongly encourage us to meet in person before your wedding day so most collections include complimentary engagement sessions.

  • Perfect for couples who want that personal, nostalgic touch. Pay per roll of 35mm film.

  • Receive a gallery of vertical iPhone photos and videos within 24 hours of your wedding.

    While you wait 6-8 weeks for your professionally curated wedding gallery, I offer in-house content creation to ensure you and your guests can focus on being present and so that you can post those wedding looks on Instagram right away.

    I bring along an assistant as the content creator so that I am fully focused on the photography!

  • My turnaround is typically 6-8 weeks, but if you want your gallery back within a week of your wedding, this option is made available for you.

  • Photography coverage can be added to cover all wedding moments and events.

Your photographs are meant to be cherished, preserved, experienced and passed on; not quickly bypassed in your social media feed.

  • Joanna is so so so lovely to work with! She absolutely nailed what we have envisioned for our vibe and aesthetic in not only our engagement photos and my elopement photos but even for a personal family shoot we pulled together somewhat last minute.

    Joanna is very professional in all her correspondence and in person, she has wonderful communication and direction and is such a big help when you’re like me and my husband and don’t really know what you’re supposed to do on your wedding day. She assisted us with timeline, details, extra ideas, props and everything in between to give us the best outcome and we have always been so blown away and in love with the results.

In order to make every photo in your gallery feel like you, I want to make sure we are a great fit.

I fully invest in my couples and my business so I pay attention to your vision and the details you provide. Because of this, I do not take on every wedding I am approached to photograph and only take on a few weddings each year.

 FAQs

  • Typically 10-18 months in advance for weddings, as soon as you have a date and venue secured.

    For sessions, I typically book 4-6 weeks in advanced.

    For winter and/or off season dates, I could have the date available a few weeks before so do not hesitate to ask.

  • A signed contract and 30% non-refundable retainer fee are due up front to book your date in my calendar.

    The remainder balance is due in full 30 days prior to your wedding. Accepted payment options include major credit cards, e-transfer, paypal, and cash.

  • There is no travel charge for weddings within the City of Calgary, Banff National Park or the Town of Canmore.

    For weddings outside this area, I will plan something out with you so we can find the most appropriate travelling options (whether it is a flight or a drive).

  • The amount of photos depends greatly on your day but I guarantee an average of 50 to 60 images per hour of coverage.

  • My turn around time for weddings is typically 6-8 weeks.

    Engagement sessions turnaround is 2 weeks.

  • Yes, film is available as an add-on for all services! I shoot on 35mm.

  • As of the 2025 season, I have a list of videographers with a similar style to me that I can recommend.

    I am working on my own videography portfolio to be able to offer photo + video packages for 2026 onwards. If you are interested, please mention this in our initial consultation for discounted rates due to lack of portfolio.

    For any future photo + video packages, I will be the lead photographer and bring on a lead videographer. I will still be the one in charge of editing the footage.

  • I have a hidden portfolio for almost every kind of photography so feel free to reach out to view them. I take any photography requests as long as I am confident that I can serve you and if it fits into my schedule. Please note that weekends are reserved for weddings & elopements.

  • If you decide to cancel your session you forfeit the retainer fee.

    If circumstances arise and you must reschedule, we can do so if it fits into my calendar. There will be no additional fees.

    You can reschedule a session up to 3 times, after that the retainer fee is forfeited.

    If weather is uncooperative and we mutually agree to switch dates, there will be no additional fees.

  • I do not because editing is half the magic that goes into my creative process.

    I also only edit my own & second shooters’ photographs.

    Please be advised that if you are considering to ask for RAW/unedited images, I am not the photographer for you.

  • Besides color correcting, I retouch impermanent blemishes/marks/bruises if makeup is not an option. I don’t retouch anything that is part of your body (i.e. curves, double chins, etc). If you are particularly self conscious about something please let me know as I want you to feel 100% comfortable and confident with the posing and direction I give you while we shoot.

  • If I am personally unavailable, you have the option of an associate shooter who would physically photograph your wedding day and I would be the one to edit all your final images in my traditional style.
